Water in this brook flows normally downstream around a boat shaped orifice underneath the grid shown in the pictures. As water levels increase, the water flows over the lip of the orifice and from there directly into the river Severn. The capacity of the facility is huge in terms of water management. At times of flood, the objective is to maintain a small flow downstream of the brook whilst diverting any major flood water away to the river.
The large flows experienced here require a large area of screening, hence the addition of the horizontal screening pictured together with the replacement of the walkways around which also provide some screening.
